Introduction

We live in a world full of bullies, criminals, thugs, and terrorists. As long as these criminals create the demand for illegal weapons, they will have access to them just as they do with any illegal drug. It becomes the duty of both the government and society to deal with this problem in order to make us safer. How we intend to control gun violence, however, is a matter of great political debate. This web site has been developed in order to settle this matter once and for all. In a masterful combination of common sense, wisdom, humor, and only the most indisputable evidence, this site will help you to fully understand the psychological, emotional, political, and social implications of the all controversial gun.

There are two intrinsic values that motivate human concern on the gun issue. They are safety, and liberty. The anti-gun philosophy weighs these values against each other, and places safety first. The idea is that liberty to own a gun and defend ones self must be sacrificed in order for people to be safe. They believe safety will come by attempting to eliminate all people's access to guns either altogether, or to some other degree. The pro-gun philosophy, is that sacrificing liberty in order to obtain safety makes nobody free or safe. They believe that guns cannot possibly be eliminated by government intervention, and that only harmless law abiding citizens are willing to obey these laws anyway. Both sides agree on the value of safety, and both sides agree that violent criminals should not be allowed to possess guns, because they forfeit any claim to that right by being criminals.

Some modern Sentiment:

"When we got organized as a country and we wrote a fairly radical Constitution with a radical Bill of Rights, giving a radical amount of individual freedom to Americans ...... And so a lot of people say there's too much personal freedom. When personal freedom's being abused, you have to move to limit it. That's what we did in the announcement I made last weekend on the public housing projects, about how we're going to have weapon sweeps and more things like that to try to make people safer in their communities."

-- U.S. President Bill Clinton, on MTV 3-22-94

-Early American Sentiment:

"Give me liberty or give me death."

-- Patrick Henry

-Early American Sentiment:

"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms."

-- Thomas Jefferson (Jefferson Papers, p. 334, C.J. Boyd, 1950)

 -Modern American Sentiment:

"If I could have gotten 51 votes in the Senate of the United States for an outright ban, picking up every one of them -- Mr. and Mrs. America, turn them all in -- I would have done it."

-- Senator Dianne Feinstein CA
